WWF warns of important ecosystems ‘on the verge of collapse’ – rts.ch

Disruption of ecosystems and loss of biodiversity are bringing the planet closer to tipping points that could be irreversible, WWF warns. To prevent it, the organization advocates in particular changing eating habits.

The latest livery of the “Living Planet” report published Thursday by the WWF reveals worrying figures. “Over the past 50 years, the average size of wildlife populations observed globally has declined by 73%,” it reads.

“If the population sizes of certain animals continue to decline, this means that eventually, certain species will disappear, because the populations will no longer have enough specimens able to reproduce.”

All around the globe, important ecosystems are “on the verge of collapse.” The WWF speaks of a “catastrophic” trend.

The study focused on the evolution of the populations of 5,495 species of amphibians, birds, fish, mammals and reptiles around the world. 35,000 populations (or living spaces) were assessed.
