A plane pilot died in mid-flight this Wednesday, October 9, 2024, forcing the aircraft to make an emergency landing in New York.
The Turkish Airlines plane made an emergency landing at New York’s Kennedy Airport early Wednesday, October 9, after the captain died mid-flight, airline officials reported, relayed by THE NY Post.
The captain would have felt unwell
The 59-year-old pilot, identified as Ilcehin Pehlivan, “collapsed” during the flight, airline spokesperson Yahya Ustun wrote on X.
The Airbus A350-900 was flying from Seattle to the Turkish capital of Istanbul when it made a sharp turn towards the Big Apple, according to data from flight tracking site FlightAware.
Died before the plane landed
While first aid was provided to him, another pilot, assisted by a co-pilot, decided to make an emergency landing at New York airport.
Unfortunately, the captain died as a result of his illness before the aircraft landed.
Ilcehin Pehlivan had worked for Turkish Airlines since 2007 and had a medical examination in March which revealed no health problems, the airline spokesperson said.
