An Airbus from the Turkish company which was to connect Seattle to Istanbul had to make a stopover before beginning its Atlantic crossing on Wednesday.

Victim of illness in mid-flight, the captain could not be resuscitated.

He died before his two co-pilots made an emergency landing in New York.

It’s an extremely rare accident. A Turkish Airlines flight was forced to make an emergency landing in New York on Wednesday, October 9, after the death of its pilot, who fell ill after departure. Departing Tuesday evening from Seattle, on the west coast of the United States, the Airbus 350 was due to reach Istanbul, announced the Turkish airline.

“The captain of our Airbus 350 (…) TK204 plane fainted during the flight”indicates a spokesperson for Turkish Airlines on X. “After a vain attempt at first aid”the two co-pilots “decided to make an emergency landing, but our captain lost his life before landing”he specifies.

The causes of the pilot’s death have not yet been communicated. His employer simply specified that the 59-year-old man had successfully passed a periodic medical examination at the beginning of March.
