: the Assembly largely rejects the motion of censure tabled by the left

SOnly 197 deputies approved on Tuesday the motion of censure tabled by the left against the government of Michel Barnier, far from the 289 votes necessary to overthrow it.

This motion was signed by 192 of the 193 deputies of the New Popular Front, joined by a handful of deputies. From the podium, the first secretary of the PS Olivier Faure castigated the “democratic misappropriation” of the government, the result according to him of an “electoral hold-up, with Mr. Barnier denouncing for his part an “a priori” censorship.

Earlier in the day, Michel Barnier denounced an “a priori” motion of censure from the left, and contested the idea that his government was illegitimate, considering that his “relative majority” was the “least relative” possible in the Assembly national.

“You informed me that before I even opened my mouth, before I formed the government, before I presented a general policy declaration, you were going to censor me. (…) It is in some way an a priori motion of censure,” said the Prime Minister in front of the deputies, responding to Olivier Faure, boss of the Socialist Party. “There is an absolute majority for no one”, the “relative majority which accompanies the government is today the least relative”, he added.
