Three provinces on alert, cumulative rainfall of 50 to 70 l/m²: storm Kirk will hit Belgium

LThe Royal Meteorological Institute (IRM) announces heavy rainfall on Tuesday at midday in the south-eastern half of the country between Wednesday 5:00 a.m. and Thursday morning the same time. This earns the province of Luxembourg an orange warning, while the provinces of Liège and Namur are affected by a yellow warning.

These heavy rains will be caused by the Kirk depression. It will mainly be continuous rain, specifies the IRM.

“In the province of Luxembourg, accumulations of 50 to 70l/m² (or even a little more) could fall in several places in 24 hours, justifying an orange code,” details the institute.

Accumulated precipitation of 25 to 50l/m² in 24 hours is expected in the provinces of Liège and Namur, which triggers a yellow code. “We also note a risk of very locally exceeding 50 mm in the east of the province of Liège,” points out the MRI.

The 1722 activated

The Federal Public Service (FPS) Interior announced on Tuesday that it had activated the number 1722 for risk of storm or flood.

Citizens are invited to dial the number 1722 dedicated to non-urgent interventions by firefighters in the event of damage caused by the storm or water damage.

In addition to this special number, the public service recommends that the population submit a request for assistance through the electronic counter (1722.be), the latter being “the most direct way to request help from firefighters in situations in which no life is in danger.

The number 112 should only be used in the event of an emergency, insists the FPS Interior.
