October 7, one year later

The Hamas attack in Israel and the war in Gaza shook the world. A year after this devastating October 7, 2023, Le Temps recounts its impact on the intimacy of Israeli and Palestinian lives as well as the dynamics which are reshaping the Near and Middle East and the debates which are agitating Switzerland.

Has the Islamic Republic gone astray in its connection with Hamas? During its October 7 attack, the latter crossed a red line that Iran and its proxies (Houthis, Hezbollah, Iraqi militias) had refrained from crossing, attacking numerous civilians and invading parts of southern Israel for a few hours. A brutal and spectacular blow which does not, in certain respects, fall in line with the IRGC’s strategy.

“It appears that the Iranian regime was caught off guard and did not have full knowledge of the scale of the Hamas operation. However, the Iranian regime could not let him go. For a year, Tehran has therefore sought a war of attrition against Israel through Hezbollah, without a direct confrontation from which the regime knows it would lose. The strategy of the Islamic Republic is part of the medium and long term,” says Jonathan Piron, historian specializing in Iran and researcher at the Group for Research and Information on Peace and Security (GRIP).
