BEIRUT, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) — Israeli military aircraft launched a series of violent strikes on the southern suburbs of Beirut on Saturday evening, local Al-Jadeed television channel reported.

The targeted areas included Amrousieh, Choueifat, Haret Hreik and Burj al-Barajneh, the channel said, adding that one of the raids hit a location near a gas station, causing a huge fire.

Television images showed that Israeli aircraft continued to fly over Beirut.

Media coverage did not mention whether the attacks caused any casualties.

Since September 23, the Israeli army has intensified its airstrikes against Hezbollah throughout Lebanon, causing numerous civilian casualties and displacing residents in many areas. The airstrikes also targeted and killed key Hezbollah leaders, including the group’s secretary general, Hassan Nasrallah. Additionally, Israel has launched what it describes as a “limited” ground operation in Lebanon.

These escalations have exacerbated clashes between Israel and Hezbollah, which began on October 8, 2023, when Hezbollah fired rockets at Israel in support of Hamas in the Gaza Strip, provoking retaliatory fire and airstrikes from Israel in southeastern Lebanon.
