New brake on the construction of the Chablais highway

For a long time, the Chablais motorway project (Haute-Savoie/F), near the border, has divided Franco-Geneva authorities, residents of the region and associative circles. To slow down the eventual construction of a 2×2 lane between Machilly and Thonon-les-Bains, opponents have highlighted a new element which could block the file, reveals the “Dauphiné Libéré”. This is a project to remove two SNCF level crossings, located in the immediate vicinity of the future Perrignier interchange.

If the end of these level crossings has indeed been planned, the five-year deadline to complete their removal has just expired, point out opponents of the motorway route. Now obsolete, the project should therefore start from scratch: which, in turn, would postpone the opening of the 2×2 lane construction site. The mayor of Perrignier, however, disputes the opponents’ analysis. The Chablais highway has attracted criticism from both sides of the border, particularly for environmental and mobility reasons (the car being favored over public transport). Its supporters see it as a way to open up French Chablais and reduce the traffic which is suffocating certain localities in the region.
