Parliamentary debate requested on military engagement in the face of the Iranian threat

The parliamentary group of La Insoumise (LFI) in the National Assembly is calling for a “debate” in Parliament following the announcement from the Élysée concerning “the mobilization of military means” to counter the “Iranian threat”. This request was made by Mathilde Panot, president of the LFI group, last Thursday.

In a letter addressed to the President of the National Assembly, Mathilde Panot recalls article 35 of the Constitution which stipulates that “the Government informs Parliament of its decision to involve the armed forces abroad, three days after the start of the intervention. To date, the French government has not clarified the nature of its involvement, raising questions among LFI MPs.

Mathilde Panot asks: “What should we understand? That France has mobilized forces projected abroad in the service of a State, which flouts all the rules of international law…? » This questioning aims to stimulate reflection on France’s current military commitments.

She insists on the fact that the expression “mobilization of military means in the Middle East to counter the Iranian threat” is equivalent to an “intervention of armed forces abroad”, requiring official information to Parliament. Mathilde Panot calls for a debate, stressing that respect for parliamentary rights is essential in this critical situation.

As a reminder, Israel was targeted Tuesday evening by around 200 missiles coming from Iran, according to Israeli authorities. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards confirmed the shooting, in response to previous attacks.
