Melania Trump takes a stand for abortion and contradicts her husband: News

In her memoirs, Melania Trump ardently defends the right to abortion, the British daily The Guardian revealed on Wednesday October 2. A position which goes against that of her husband, candidate in the presidential election in November.

“Why should anyone other than the woman herself have the power to determine what she does with her body?” It is through this unanswered question that Melania Trump revealed her pro-abortion position in her memoirs, reveals Le Figaro based on information obtained by The Guardian on October 2. In her book to be published Tuesday, October 8, and of which the British daily obtained a copy, Donald Trump’s wife therefore displays positions opposite to those of her husband, candidate for the third time in the presidential election American, which will take place on November 5.

Abortion, a question of “individual freedom”

According to the ex-top model, a woman’s decision whether or not to abort is a question of “individual freedom”a value that it places at the very top of the pyramid on several occasions. She goes even further, asserting that women must be “free from any intervention or pressure from the government” and that “Restricting a woman’s right to choose to terminate an unwanted pregnancy is the same as prohibiting her from controlling her own body.”claiming that she “had this conviction throughout my adult life”.

This strong position one month before the American election is not without surprise, given the openly anti-abortion positions of her husband and the Republican camp. During his mandate (2016-2020), the now ex-president appointed three conservative judges to the Supreme Court. A decision which, he boasted, led the highest American court to annul the federal guarantee of the right to abortion in June 2022, by overturning the Roe v. Wade of 1973 and thereby half a century of jurisprudence. Since then, it has been up to States to legislate on the issue, which has led a certain number of them to restrict access to abortion, or even to ban it outright.

A deep difference of opinion

The debate on reproductive rights is at the heart of the presidential campaign pitting Democrat and Joe Biden’s Vice President Kamala Harris against Republican Donald Trump. Although the latter has tried to soften his position since the start of the campaign, thereby attracting the wrath of the conservatives in his party, his position on the issue remains clear. Last month, during a debate against Kamala Harris, he falsely claimed that for her, “aborting after nine months posed no problem”. An accusation which only deepens the gulf which seems to exist between his positions and those of his wife.
