A surgeon operated on a patient who was… 8,000 kilometers away: how is this possible?

This is a first in the world of surgery. A doctor operated on a patient suffering from a tumor while the latter was 8,000 kilometers away.

From to Beijing. From the Palais des Congrès in the French city, Spanish doctor Alberto Breda operated on a patient suffering from a tumor. The particularity of this operation: the patient in question was 8,000 kilometers awayin Beijing.

This is the first time that an intervention of this type has taken place on two different continents. To try to treat his 37-year-old patient suffering from a kidney tumor, the president of the European Society of Urology used a robot that he controlled remotely.

The surgeon controlled the robotic arms that operated in China, along with a series of doctors who came to supervise. Despite the distance, the lag between the robot’s commands and movements was only 132 milliseconds. In other words, it is as if the doctor was present on site.

The machine made it possible to save the affected organ while eliminating the tumor. The operation was therefore a success and the patient was able to leave the hospital after just three days. This feat opens the way to many perspectives in the medical field.
