Dominican Republic to expel 10,000 undocumented Haitians per week

The Dominican Republic announced on Wednesday an “immediate execution” plan to expel 10,000 undocumented Haitians per week to combat illegal immigration from the neighboring country with which it shares the island of Hispaniola, in the Caribbean. .

“This operation aims to reduce the excess migrant population perceived in Dominican communities and will be carried out within the framework of strict protocols guaranteeing respect for the human rights and dignity of returnees,” the spokesperson said in a statement. words of President Luis Abinader following a meeting of the National Security and Defense Council.

Homero Figueroa indicated that despite a multinational mission to support the Haitian police, the results obtained were “limited” and that “faced with this reality, we are obliged to act voluntarily and responsibly to guarantee the security and stability of our country.

Among the points agreed during the meeting of the National Security and Defense Council, Mr. Figueroa highlighted the strengthening of border surveillance and control with the deployment of more personnel and specialized equipment, including cameras and drones.
