Two Israeli aerial bombardments kill at least 16 in southern Lebanon

AA / Ankara / Ahmed Asmar

The Israeli army carried out two aerial bombardments against southern Lebanon on Tuesday morning, killing at least 16 people, including children.

According to the official Lebanese National News Agency (NNA), 10 people from the same family were killed by an aerial bombardment of their house in the southern town of Al-Dawoudia.

A medical source told Anadolu that another airstrike on the Ein el-Hilweh refugee camp, located south of Sidon, killed 6 people, including 3 children, and injured several others.

Founded in 1948, the Ein el-Hilweh camp is the largest Palestinian refugee camp in Lebanon, with 50,000 people registered, according to UN figures, although unofficial figures put the camp’s population at 70 000 people.

The Israeli army bombed several other towns in southern Lebanon on Tuesday morning, at a time when Tel Aviv announced a “limited” ground operation in southern Lebanon.

On Monday evening, the Lebanese Ministry of Health reported that the toll from Israeli airstrikes against Lebanon over the past 24 hours was at least 95 dead and 172 injured.

Since September 23, Israel has carried out large-scale airstrikes against what it says are Hezbollah targets across Lebanon, killing more than 1,057 people and injuring more than 2,950 others, according to the Lebanese Health Ministry.

Several Hezbollah leaders were killed in these bombings, including Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah.

Hezbollah and Israel have been engaged in a cross-border war since the start of the Israeli war on Gaza. The Israeli offensive against the Palestinian enclave left nearly 41,600 dead, the majority of whom are mainly women and children, following the cross-border attack carried out by the Palestinian group Hamas in October 2023.

The international community has warned against strikes targeting the territory of Lebanon, as there is a risk of escalation of the Gaza conflict into a regional conflict.
