EU calls emergency meeting of foreign ministers

Lhe head of European diplomacy Josep Borrell summoned ministers for a videoconference meeting at 5:00 p.m. (3:00 p.m. GMT) to “discuss the EU’s response to the ongoing escalation in Lebanon”, said a spokesperson for the diplomatic service of the European Union.

The 27, very divided on the attitude to adopt regarding Israeli attacks in Gaza or Lebanon, have until now remained powerless to stop the violence in the Middle East.

Josep Borrell deplored Friday evening at the UN that “no one”, not even the United States, can “stop” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in his wars against Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon.

The Israeli army carried out an airstrike in the heart of Beirut on Monday, for the first time since the start of the military escalation between Israel and Lebanese Hezbollah, killing three members of a Palestinian armed group.

In total, more than 1,000 people have been killed in Lebanon, according to Lebanese authorities, since the start of the military escalation between Israel and Hezbollah in mid-September.

Israel has promised to fight its “enemies” and “eliminate” them wherever they are, following the death on Friday of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, killed in a powerful Israeli strike on the southern suburbs of Beirut.
