(Keystone-ATS) The Israeli army announced on Saturday that it had “eliminated” the leader of the Lebanese armed Islamist movement Hezbollah. Hassan Nasrallah died in a strike the day before on the organization’s headquarters in Beirut, added an army spokesperson.

“Hassan Nasrallah is dead,” an army spokesperson, Lt. Col. Nadav Shoshani, said on the social network AFP that the leader of Hezbollah had been “eliminated”.

Israel carried out a devastating raid on the southern suburbs of Beirut on Friday, which destroyed dozens of buildings, forced hundreds of people to flee and left at least six dead.

Hezbollah, which usually announces the death of its commanders during the day, had still not made an official announcement more than 15 hours after this raid on the fate of its leader. A source close to the movement announced on Saturday that contact with Nasrallah had been lost since Friday evening.
