Israel blocks foreign diplomats from entering Ibrahimi Mosque in Hebron

AA / Ramallah / Abu Samra

Israeli authorities prevented members of the diplomatic corps accredited to Palestine from entering the area of the Ibrahimi Mosque in the ancient city of Hebron, south of the occupied West Bank.

The Palestinian Foreign Ministry said in a statement sent to Anadolu Agency that “the occupation authorities prevented members of the diplomatic corps, on tour in the Hebron region, including the ancient villa, from entering the area of the Ibrahimi Mosque.”

The ministry explained that this is an “attempt by the Israeli authorities to prevent (diplomatic) representatives from being informed of the crimes of Judaization, looting and distortion.”

In cooperation with the Hebron governorate, the Palestinian Foreign Ministry organized a field tour attended by 30 ambassadors, heads of mission and international organizations, to “inform them of the reality of the governorate, including its old city, which is subject to continuous violations by the government and the occupation militias,” the statement said.

The Ibrahimi Mosque is located in the Israeli-controlled Old City of Hebron and is home to around 400 settlers, guarded by around 1,500 Israeli soldiers.

Since 1994, Israel has divided the mosque into 63% Jewish and 37% Muslim sections, following a massacre by a settler that killed 29 Palestinian worshipers.

In parallel with its war on the Gaza Strip since October 7, 2023, the Israeli army and settlers have intensified their attacks in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, killing 716 Palestinians and injuring 5,750, in addition to the arrest of more than 10,800 people, according to official Palestinian institutions.

With the full support of the United States, Israel is waging a devastating war in Gaza, leaving more than 137,000 Palestinians dead and wounded, most of them children and women, and more than 10,000 missing, amid massive destruction and famine that has killed dozens of children, in one of the world’s worst humanitarian disasters.
