Sahara: Saint Kitts and Nevis reaffirms its support for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Morocco

United Nations (New York) – The Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Trade, Industry, Commerce and Consumer Affairs, Economic Development and Investment of Saint Kitts and Nevis, Denzil Llewellyn Douglas, reiterated Monday in New York his country’s consistent position in support of Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara and the territorial integrity of the Kingdom.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Abroad, Nasser Bourita and his counterpart from Saint Kitts and Nevis proceeded, this Monday, to the signing of a joint communiqué between the two countries, following a meeting held on the sidelines of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly.

In this statement, the Kingdom of Morocco and the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis expressed their full commitment to consolidate, energize and broaden the scope of their cooperation, expressing their willingness to conclude a 2024-2026 roadmap for new generation cooperation for the next three years.

Regarding the Sahara issue, the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis reaffirmed its support for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Kingdom of Morocco over its entire territory, including the Moroccan Sahara.

In this statement, Mr. Douglas also reiterated his country’s support for the Autonomy Initiative, presented by the Kingdom in 2007, as the only credible, serious and realistic solution for resolving the dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.

In this regard, he welcomed the efforts of the United Nations as an exclusive framework to achieve a realistic, practical and lasting solution to this regional dispute.

As a member of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis welcomed the opening of an OECS Embassy in Rabat (18 October 2018) and a Consulate General in Dakhla (31 March 2022), which represent a great opportunity to further consolidate bilateral trade between the Kingdom of Morocco and the six Eastern Caribbean States.
