Israeli President: “The Situation May Change, But We Cannot Abandon the North to Hezbollah Rockets”

As the specter of all-out war looms over northern Israel, President Isaac Herzog spoke on British television on Sunday Sky NewsHe stressed the seriousness of the situation against Hezbollah, while reaffirming his country’s absolute priority: “Bringing our citizens home is our most fundamental duty.”

Herzog recalled the origins of the conflict: “Hezbollah, supported by Iran, started this war. Our citizens are subjected to incessant bombing, forcing the evacuation of nearly 100,000 Israelis. This situation cannot continue.” He insisted that Israel did not choose this conflict, pointing the finger at Iran and its regional allies as the real instigators.

The president then expressed his disappointment with some Western countries, particularly Britain: “Despite our excellent relations, we expect our friends to support us as we support them. I shared this sentiment with Prime Minister Keir Starmer.” He appealed to Western countries: “Understand that this war concerns you too. We are facing an extremist ideology that threatens the Middle East, Europe and the whole world. Hezbollah represents a global danger with its terrorist cells spread everywhere.”

To illustrate his point, Herzog invited presenter Trevor Phillips to imagine a similar scenario in Britain: “If the people of Bournemouth had to be evacuated to Manchester or Brighton for a year because of attacks from a neighbouring country, how long would your government stand by?”
