Italy: Three people including two children aged 4 and 6 killed in building collapse, their mother missing

Tragic. Two young children, a brother and sister, and a woman were killed Sunday near Naples, in southern Italy, when the building in which they lived collapsed, firefighters said.

The two-story building, located in the town of Saviano, collapsed in the morning, according to authorities. “The firefighters found the father and a newborn alive, and unfortunately the lifeless bodies of the other two children,” the firefighters wrote on X. According to local media, the girl was 4 years old, her brother 6 years old.

After several hours of searching, firefighters, aided by sniffer dogs, discovered in the rubble the body of a third victim, a woman, “who has not yet been identified,” Luca Cari, a firefighter spokesman, told RaiNews 24.

The advanced gas trail

“It’s a woman and we are currently extracting (the body) from the rubble,” he added, stressing that the search operations were complicated.

Local media identified the woman as the grandmother of the dead children, who lived on the second floor of the building. The mother was still missing, according to media reports.

More than 60 civil protection volunteers were involved in the rescue operation, according to the Campania region. The father and baby pulled from the rubble were hospitalized, the father in serious condition. Images posted by firefighters showed two large holes in the roof of the building, which had partly collapsed. The collapse could have been caused by a gas explosion, according to media reports.
