13-year-old student attacks classmates and teachers with hammer, four injured at Russian school

Four people were injured Monday at a school in the Urals city of Chelyabinsk when a student attacked them with a hammer, local authorities said. “Emergency situation at school number 68 in Chelyabinsk,” regional governor Alexei Teksler wrote on Telegram. Armed with a hammer, “a student attacked other schoolchildren and teachers” before being arrested, he said.

Four people, including two girls and a 13-year-old boy and a teacher, were injured and hospitalized, according to the local health ministry. According to a police Source, quoted by the RIA Novosti news agency, the 13-year-old attacker also had a knife and a pistol on him.

An investigation into “organization of a murder” and “negligence” has been opened, announced the Russian Investigative Committee, which is in charge of the main investigations in the country.

Increasing number of attacks on schools in Russia

“A big question arises: how could a student enter the school with a hammer, why did the guards not react?” asked Alexei Teksler, announcing that he had ordered a check of the security level in all schools in the region. The attacker’s motives were not immediately clear.

Once extremely rare, armed attacks in schools, sometimes fatal, have tended to become more numerous in Russia in recent years, to the point that President Vladimir Putin has become alarmed, seeing it according to him as a phenomenon imported from the United States and a perverse effect of globalization, which has led him to toughen up legislation on the carrying of weapons.

In December 2023, a 14-year-old girl opened fire at a school in Bryansk, a city in southwestern Russia, killing a classmate before committing suicide. In September 2022, a shooting in Izhevsk, central Russia, left 18 people dead. And in 2021, a 21-year-old attacker killed nine people at a school in Kazan, Tatarstan.
