Nearly three years after the invasion launched by Moscow, could kyiv (finally) hope for a respite? Discussed for a long time, a possible exchange between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin would be a first step. Barely arriving at the White House, the Republican had threatened Russia with sanctions if he did not find an agreement “now” with Ukraine. Far from bragging, the tenant of the Kremlin said on Friday he was “ready” for “negotiations”.

Slovakia could even host these talks, according to Moscow, which says it is now waiting for “signals” from Washington. No excess optimism, however. Nothing has yet been decided: neither the Kremlin nor the White House have risked putting forward an agenda. The Republican had promised in 2023 to resolve the Ukrainian war “in twenty-four hours”. A fanciful deadline that he has since extended by “a few weeks”.
