Knife attack in Germany: the suspect should have been in prison at the time of the incident

The suspect in the Aschaffenburg knife attack should have been in prison. At the end of December 2024, he was supposed to stay behind bars for more than a month, but the sentence was not carried out. For what reasons?

At the end of December 2024, he was to remain behind bars for more than a month, but the sentence was not carried out, says the Schweinfurt public prosecutor’s office. In question? A legal rule which states that the court must, under certain conditions, impose a global sentence, when different convictions which are linked have been imposed. It is then that the length of incarceration of the convicted person is decided.

Already known to the courts

The suspect in the knife attack was already known to the courts for damage to property, mistreatment and insults. He was ordered to pay fines by two different courts. Since he did not pay the first payment, he was sentenced on December 23 to subsidiary imprisonment for 40 days. But in the meantime, the second penalty with a fine has become legally binding. The Schweinfurt court therefore first had to make a decision regarding the overall sentence.

According to the public prosecutor, this has still not happened, “among other things due to the required service and translation of the documents“. This is why the man was at large on Wednesday.
