The prefecture announced Monday evening the triggering of level 3 of a crisis management system linked to “arboviruses” in the French department plagued by a “low intensity” chikungunya epidemic.

“Due to the increase in the number of cases and the dispersion of outbreaks […]Patrice Latron, prefect of Reunion Island, triggers level 3 of the ORSEC “Arboviroses” system, which corresponds to the circulation of a low-intensity epidemic,” declared the prefecture in a press release relayed by the local press.

ORSEC is the acronym for the specific Civil Security Response Organization system.

According to Le Quotidien de La Réunion, the prefect and the director general of the Regional Health Agency (ARS) brought together representatives of local authorities on Monday “to take stock of the epidemiological situation and implement reinforced actions in consultation with public authorities”. “The mobilization of all stakeholders and the population is necessary to avoid a large-scale epidemic,” noted Patrice Latron, relayed by the regional daily.

Some 192 cases of chikungunya, transmitted by the tiger mosquito, have been recorded since August 23, 2024 on Reunion Island, a French department in the Indian Ocean which has nearly 900,000 inhabitants, notes Libération.

The city of L’Etang-Salé has the most sectors affected by the virus with 90 cases, specifies Le Quotidien de La Réunion, noting an increase in the number of isolated cases which goes from 38% to 45%.

Chikungunya is a viral disease transmitted to humans by infected mosquitoes, first described during an outbreak in southern Tanzania in 1952, informs the World Health Organization (WHO) on its official website. It causes fever and severe arthralgia (joint pain). Other symptoms are myalgia, headache, nausea, fatigue and rash.
