A survey by the CSA institute for CNEWS, Europe 1 and JDD, published this Wednesday, reveals that 66% of French people believe that all immigration from Algeria should immediately stop.
While diplomatic relations between France and Algeria have become considerably strained, culminating in the arrest, on November 16 in Algiers, of the Franco-Algerian writer Boualem Sansal, a CSA poll for CNEWS, Europe 1 and the Journal du Dimanche, published this Wednesday January 8, reveal that 66% of French people consider that all immigration from Algeria should be stopped.
Conversely, 33% of those questioned answered “no” to the question: “Should we immediately stop all immigration from Algeria”, while 1% of the panel did not comment.
In detail, 66% of men and 67% of women believe that immigration from Algeria should be stopped. Regarding the age of respondents, those aged 50 and over are the most likely to have answered “yes” to the question asked by the CSA institute (74%), ahead of those aged 35-49 (60%) and 25-34 year olds (59%).
Considering socio-professional categories, 70% of inactive people think that immigration from Algeria must stop. These are 6 points more compared to CSP-, who represent the least advantaged people (64%), and 7 points more compared to CSP+ (63%).
A significant divide between left and right
The idea of stopping all immigration from Algeria is strongly divided, depending on political affiliations. The majority of respondents with left-wing sensibilities answered “no” to the question asked, up to 72% for LFI supporters, 66% for the Ecologists and 54% for those close to the Socialist Party.
-On the right, 98% of French people close to the ideas of the National Rally believe that all immigration from Algeria must be immediately stopped. A proportion significantly higher than that of Republicans (78%).
As for the presidential majority, 66% of Renaissance voters agree with a halt to Algerian immigration to France.
In addition to the arrest of Boualem Sansal, for which Emmanuel Macron estimated, on January 6, that Algeria “dishonors itself” by not proceeding with his release, the multiplication of hateful videos from Algerian or French influencers -Algerians has come, a little more, to poison diplomatic relations between Paris and Algiers.
If the exit of the President of the Republic on the subject of Boualem Sansal was deemed “unacceptable” by Algerian diplomacy, the question of influencers, for its part, raised numerous questions, the French services not excluding that the Algeria was able to lead a coordinated initiative to destabilize France.
Before that, and while relations between the two countries were already not in good shape, the Minister of the Interior, Bruno Retailleau, said he was in favor, during a hearing in the Senate on November 27, of a “denunciation of the Franco-Algerian agreement of 1968”, which organizes the movement, employment and stay in France of Algerian nationals and their families, according to rules derogating from common law.
*Survey carried out on January 8 by self-administered online questionnaire on a nationally representative sample of 1,011 people aged over 18, using the quota method.
