According to information from the National Foundation of Indigenous Peoples of Brazil (Funai), the country is home to at least 28 isolated communities. THE Guardian and the Brazilian newspaper The Globe have just revealed never-before-seen images of one of them, the Massacos. Taken in 2019 and 2024, these photographs were obtained using hidden cameras within the area occupied by these people, which is located in the heart of the Amazon rainforest, a few kilometers from the border with Bolivia.
Three meter arches
The Massaco are first of all distinguished by the formidable wooden traps they set, capable of tearing off a tractor tire, and their hunting skills. The bows and arrows found in their abandoned camps can exceed three meters, which places them among the longest ever observed in the Amazon. “We have no idea how they shoot their arrows,” admits Altair Algayer, responsible for their protection within Funai. Other indigenous people also try to understand, laugh and say it's impossible. We have no answer to this mystery.”
