As Donald Trump continues to nominate his candidates for key positions in his administration, more than half of American adults (55%) say they have little or no confidence that he will surround himself with well-qualified people, according to a poll AP/NORC published this Friday. Only 27% of respondents say they are very or extremely confident that it will succeed. Oh! as my Yiddish friends would say.
The lack of confidence expressed by a majority of Americans contrasts sharply with Trump’s claim to have obtained a historic mandate from voters. Members of Donald Trump’s party are obviously much more confident than Democrats or independents, but they do not form a monolithic bloc on the subject: around six in ten Republicans are “extremely” or “very” confident in the nominations of the president-elect and in his ability to manage the White House, the army and public spending.
Trump and his allies will no doubt prefer to cite the results of a CNN poll released Wednesday indicating that 55% of Americans approve of the way he is handling the presidential transition.
