A few weeks before Christmas, the Christmas markets are in full swing, attracting amazed crowds to their glittering aisles every day. Whether in big cities or in emblematic places like Colmar and Strasbourg, visitors flock there to find gifts, decorations and sweets while soaking up the magical magic of these events. But did you know that it is also possible to immerse yourself in a medieval atmosphere for the holidays? If the famous Ribeauvillé Christmas market is often cited, another, very close to Paris, promises you a unique immersion in the heart of the Middle Ages.
A medieval atmosphere in a town near Paris
To experience a medieval atmosphere during the holidays, there is no need to go to Ribeauvillé in Alsace. Just 90 km and less than an hour’s drive from Paris, the medieval Christmas market of Provins, located in Seine-et-Marne, is soon opening its doors. Listed as a UNESCO world heritage site, this charming town offers a unique immersion in the world of the Middle Ages, thanks to its activities, shows and illuminations.
This pop-up market, which is celebrating its 13th edition, will only be held on December 14 and 15, 2024. It is an exceptional opportunity to discover Provins and its riches in a magical atmosphere. An unmissable event for a magical, timeless weekend.
The activities and entertainment that make the medieval market so charming
To transport visitors into a unique medieval atmosphere, the Les Gardes-Foires de Champagne association has left nothing to chance. Although the Provins Christmas market only lasts one weekend, the activities and shows promise a memorable experience for young and old.
On the program: medieval dances with the Danceries Thibaud de Champagne (December 14 and 15 at 4 p.m.), fire eaters, jugglers and medieval camps recreated with their authentic equipment. Visitors will also be able to admire a living nativity scene at the Saint-Quiriace Collegiate Church, animated by nearly 50 actors.
The youngest will have the chance to meet Santa Claus near the César Tower, while snow sports enthusiasts will enjoy a 420 m² ice rink, installed at the Saint-Ayoul Cultural Center (open from December 6, 2024 to January 5, 2025) . As a bonus, on December 12, Philippe Candeloro will present a free ice show, perfect to kick off the festivities. This medieval Christmas market promises to be a festive and unforgettable immersion.
Gourmet tastings and local crafts
The medieval Christmas market in Provins will also delight gourmets with unique culinary specialties, directly inspired by the Middle Ages. Mead, spiced mulled wine, gingerbread and even traditional dishes will transport your taste buds to another era.
Local artisans will offer authentic objects: silver jewelry, pottery, embroidered textiles and leather accessories. Each stall reflects the medieval aesthetic, offering a total immersion in the crafts of yesteryear. This is the ideal opportunity to find unique gifts while supporting passionate artisans, in a warm and festive atmosphere.
