“I wish I could go back and fix my mistakes.” Faced with American justice, remorse. Tried since December 2, a young woman in her twenties was called to explain the facts which took place in April 2023 in Folly Beach (South Carolina). The accused, in a state of drunkenness and driving a speeding car, crashed into a golf cart in which a newly married couple and two other people were traveling. The bride died from her injuries. “I will live the rest of my life with immense remorse for what happened that night,” commented the accused on the stand, who admitted to an addiction to alcohol at the time.
“When we were in the cart, she told me that she didn't want the night to end and I kissed her on the forehead,” testified the man who was to marry the victim. In fact, following the collision, the golf cart was thrown several dozen meters away. The passenger, dressed in her wedding dress, died instantly. Her husband suffered multiple fractures and head trauma. The two other passengers in the cart were also injured.
The 27-year-old was ultimately found guilty of negligent homicide, drunk driving causing death and drunk driving causing serious injury. She was sentenced to 25 years in prison. The groom – now a widower – considered that this was a punishment “meeting the crime”: “She seems to be sorry but that doesn’t change the fact that […] my wife is no longer here, the family we wanted to build is not there, but all our wounds are there. We'll need time.”
