Tsunamis can strike “coasts located within 300 kilometers of the epicenter of the earthquake,” announces the American Institute of Geophysics.

A powerful magnitude 7 earthquake struck near the coast of northern California, the American Institute of Geophysics (USGS) announced Thursday, December 5. Authorities have issued a tsunami alert over a large part of the Californian coast.
The earthquake struck around 6:44 p.m. GMT at a depth of 10 kilometers near the small town of Eureka, according to the USGS. The tsunami warning concerns a large part of the Pacific coast north of San Francisco.
“Based on the preliminary parameters of the earthquake (…) dangerous tsunamis are possible for the coasts located within 300 kilometers of the epicenter of the earthquake”announced the American authorities. They said no areas had yet been hit by a tsunami, but anyone near the coast should be aware of the risk.
