Yulia Navalnaya’s name appears on this list kept by Rosfinmonitoring, the Russian financial intelligence service, AFP noted on Thursday. She was accused on Tuesday by the Russian justice system of “participation in an extremist group.”

“Cynical and revolting” decision

For its part, France on Thursday denounced the arrest warrant issued by Russia against exiled opponent Yulia Navalnaya, which according to Paris constitutes “a further step in the authoritarian drift of the Russian regime.”

“This decision is cynical and revolting, given that the Russian authorities are responsible for the unjustifiable death of Alexei Navalny in prison on February 16, 2024,” French diplomacy wrote in a statement.

“This demonstrates the determination of the Russian regime to hinder Yulia Navalnaya’s resumption of Alexei Navalny’s fight against corruption and in favor of freedom of expression,” added the Quai d’Orsay, saluting “the courage and determination of Ms. Navalnaya.”

Russia announced on Tuesday that it had issued an arrest warrant for Alexei Navalny’s widow, accused of “participation in an extremist group.”

The Basmanny Court in the Russian capital also ordered the pre-trial detention of the opposition leader, who lives abroad, in absentia.

Mrs Navalnaya has vowed to take up the mantle from her husband, Vladimir Putin’s arch-enemy, after he died in unclear circumstances in his Arctic prison in February 2024.
