A new general power outage occurred in Cuba on Wednesday, the third in less than two months, the Ministry of Energy and Mines announced.
“At 2:08 a.m. (07:08 GMT) a new disconnection of the national electricity system (SEN) occurred,” the ministry announced on X. The blackout occurred “after a breakdown at the Antonio Guiteras power plant”, the country’s main power station located in the province of Matanzas (center), he said.
This is the third general power outage in less than two months, once again depriving the island’s 10 million residents of power.
A first country-wide outage took place on October 18 due to a breakdown at the same power plant and fuel shortages, depriving residents of power for several days. Another disconnection of the electrical system occurred on November 6 when Hurricane Rafael swept across the west of the island.
In September 2022, the island had already experienced a widespread power outage when Hurricane Ian also hit the country’s western provinces.
The obsolescence of the eight thermoelectric plants and the reduction over the last two years of oil imports from Venezuela, its main ally, have placed Cuba in an extremely vulnerable situation.
The island is experiencing its worst economic crisis in thirty years with shortages of food and medicine, galloping inflation and frequent power cuts.
