Hamas Sets Conditions for Resumption of Negotiations

A senior Hamas leader maintains his tough stance on peace talks. In an interview with the Qatari channel Al-Araby , Suhail al-Hindi, an important figure in the movement, detailed the sine qua non conditions for any progress in the negotiations.

“The principle of negotiations has remained open since the start of the conflict,” says al-Hindi, stressing that Hamas has never closed the door to dialogue. The Palestinian terrorist movement maintains close contacts with several regional mediators, notably Egypt and Qatar.

The five conditions set by Hamas remain unchanged. “We demand an immediate ceasefire, the full withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Gaza Strip, the return of displaced populations to the north of the territory, a fair prisoner exchange agreement, as well as the establishment of “a program of reconstruction and humanitarian aid”, lists the Palestinian official.

Faced with questions about possible flexibility regarding a gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces, al-Hindi remained cautious. “Any proposal will be examined by our management,” he indicated, while reaffirming the capital importance of the five conditions established. The Hamas leader particularly highlighted the crucial role of regional mediators. “Our Egyptian, Qatari and Turkish brothers are making considerable efforts in this matter,” he underlined, suggesting possible diplomatic progress if their conditions are respected.
