Another data which contradicts the Republicans’ narrative according to which the November 5 vote resulted in an electoral “tidal wave” or an “overwhelming” victory for Donald Trump, a subject to which I devoted an article on Monday in The Press : if the slim lead of Democratic candidates in the House of Representatives is maintained in the last two races still pending in California, Kamala Harris’ party will have made a net gain of two seats in 2024 in the House. Such a result has never occurred in a “tidal wave” or a “landslide” victory that carried the presidential candidate of the opposing party to the White House.

The Republicans would thus claim a total of 220 seats against 215 for the Democrats. However, given Matt Gaetz’s decision to vacate his seat and the upcoming resignations of Michael Waltz and Elise Stefanik, who will occupy positions within the Trump administration, they would begin the next session with a majority of just one seat .

Such a situation would obviously complicate life for Mike Johnson, if he is re-elected as Speaker of the House, at least until early April, the earliest time a special election can be held.

“America is a closely divided nation. The same goes for the House of Representatives in the next Congress, even if North Carolina is the subject of extreme partisan gerrymandering. A mandate? “, asked New York Democratic Representative Hakeem Jeffries (photo), leader of his party in the House, on X on Tuesday.
