VIDEO – Dozens of headstones were defaced in the Jewish sections of a cemetery in Ohio. An “act of hatred and desecration” denounced by the Jewish Federation of Cincinnati.

An act of vandalism “foolish” on 176 headstones. Two sections of the Covedale Cemetery complex in Ohio, United States, have been massively defaced, according to a statement from the Jewish Federation of Cincinnati. Markers from Tifereth Israel and Beth Hamedrash Hagadol cemeteries, two Jewish sections of the complex, were found vandalized early Monday, July 1, local newspaper Cincinnati.com reports.

“The destruction includes tombstones dating from the late 1800s, many of which have been knocked over, some cracked in two. Most of the headstones have been pushed down.”the statement said. The Jewish Federation unequivocally condemned “this act of hatred and desecration.”

“Our hearts go out to the families affected by this senseless vandalism,” said Jewish cemeteries in Greater Cincinnati, which are working to contact relatives of those whose headstones were damaged. Many of the headstones were lying face down and law enforcement advised people not to touch them in order to “preserve the integrity of their investigation,” their identification is complicated.

Jewish Cemeteries of Greater Cincinnati is working with SAFE Cincinnati, the Jewish Federation of Cincinnati Security Services, Cincinnati Police, the FBI and the City of Green Township to investigate this act of vandalism.
