In India, a young man who had been declared dead woke up moments before he was cremated. The police opened an investigation.

An Indian man woke up moments before his cremation, after a doctor failed to carry out his autopsy, a medical official confirmed to AFP on Saturday.

Rohitash Kumar, a 25-year-old young man who suffered from speech and hearing difficulties, fell ill and was taken to Jhunjhunu hospital in Rajasthan (north).

Indian media reported that he suffered an epileptic seizure, and that a doctor pronounced him dead upon arrival at the hospital.

“The body […] started to move”

But the hospital's chief doctor, D. Singh, told AFP that a doctor had “prepared the post-mortem report without carrying out the autopsy, and the body was then sent for cremation “.

The chief doctor added that “shortly before” his cremation, “the body […] started to move” but also that “he was alive and breathing”.

The young man was taken to hospital a second time, but he was pronounced dead on Friday. Three doctors were suspended, and police opened an investigation, the Times of India and other Indian media.
