Kizza Besigye, a major figure in the Ugandan opposition, was “kidnapped” in Nairobi and is being held in a military prison in Kampala, his wife, Winnie Byanyima, director of UNAIDS, said on Tuesday.
Winnie Byanyima demanded on President Martha Karua.
Kizza Besigye, 68, was himself an unsuccessful candidate in the 2001 and 2006 presidential elections against Yoweri Museveni, who has ruled the country with an iron fist since 1986.
“Why is he being held in a military prison?”
Ugandan media said they had not heard from the opponent for several days. “I now have reliable information that he is in a military prison in Kampala,” his wife said.
“We, his wife and his lawyers, are asking to see him,” she added, stressing that Kizza Besigye, who has already been arrested several times in the past, was “not a soldier”. Therefore, “why is he being held in a military prison?”, worried Winnie Byanyima.
Since 2019, Winnie Byanyima has headed the Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), headquartered in Switzerland.
