In eastern China, a man attacked two women and a child on Monday, near a school bus carrying students from the Japanese school in Suzhou. This is the second stabbing this month.

The attack took place yesterday, Monday June 24 around 4 p.m., according to a press release from the authorities of Jiangsu province, in eastern China. A man attacked several people with a knife in front of a bus stop used by a Japanese school in the city of Suzhou. The attacker injured three people, a Japanese woman and her child, as well as a Chinese woman.

The mother and her child, attacked while waiting for the bus, were quickly transported to hospital. According to the police, their lives are no longer in danger. However, the third victim, a Chinese bus hostess, was stabbed and is said to be in critical condition. She allegedly tried to stop the attack.

According to Jiangsu police, the man arrested is 52 years old. Unemployed, only his last name – Zhou – was given. An investigation is underway and the attacker’s motivations remain unknown at this time.

Following this attack, the town’s Japanese school was closed. If other Japanese schools must remain open for the moment, Chinese authorities have tightened security around establishments, at the request of the Tokyo cabinet.

Mao Ning, spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, expressed her “regret” over the attack. According to her, the incident would be an “isolated” affair.

However, this is the second attack of its kind in a month in China. On June 10, four American teachers were stabbed in a public park. The police also spoke of an “isolated case”.
