Kenya is affected by an unprecedented anti-government movement led by the country’s youth. Hundreds of demonstrators passed a police barrier this Tuesday, June 25.

Kenyan police fired live ammunition this Tuesday, June 25, against demonstrators opposing a plan for new government taxes, Amnesty International Kenya announced, citing “numerous injuries.” According to the NGO Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC), one person was killed.

“Police shot four protesters, as witnessed by KHRC, killing one of them. We strongly condemn the police killing. Such actions are unacceptable and a serious violation of human rights man (…)”, said the NGO in a message on X. AFP journalists saw at least three inanimate bodies near Parliament.

Fire in Parliament

In addition, as AFP noted on site, demonstrators entered the Parliament grounds in Nairobi and a fire broke out on site.

“Despite assurances from the Kenyan government that the right to assembly would be respected, human rights observers report the increasing use of live ammunition by the national police in the capital Nairobi… It is now urgent that doctors can benefit from safe passage to treat the many injured,” said Amnesty International Kenya Executive Director Irungu Houghton.
