A six-year love affair ended in a mess before the Disputes Tribunal, an informal court that handles small civil disputes in New Zealand. A woman filed a complaint against her boyfriend alleging that he had not respected his commitments. Jane* had everything planned: Tom* had to pick her up to take her to the airport, where she had to catch a plane to attend a concert, explains Stuff.

Much to the New Zealander’s dismay, nothing happened as she had planned. Her partner never came to pick her up, and Jane missed her flight. She was able to take another plane the next day, but missed the concert for which she had already purchased a ticket. While she was gone, Tom was supposed to stay at her house and take care of her dogs, but he didn’t do that either.

Furious, Jane took her boyfriend to the Disputes Tribunal, accusing him of breaking the verbal contract they had made. The New Zealander says postponing her trip, the shuttle to the airport and putting her dogs in a kennel cost her money. A sum that, according to her, her partner must reimburse her.

The arbitrator of this dispute was not particularly sensitive to the complainant’s arguments. “Partners, friends and colleagues enter into social agreements, but it is unlikely that they can be legally enforced (…). When a friend does not keep his promises, the other person may suffer the financial consequences, but cannot be compensated for this loss,” said Krysia Cowi in a decision made public Thursday.

As we suspected, Jane and Tom are no longer together.
