The takeover is complete for Donald Trump and his camp. The Republicans won the absolute majority in the House of Representatives after the victories announced, Wednesday, November 13, by the AP press agency of Ken Calvert (California) then Juan Ciscomani. This latest success in Arizona allows the Grand Old Party to collect a 218e seat out of the 435 at stake in the American lower house.

With nine seats still being counted, the Democratic Party, credited with 208 elected officials so far, can no longer reverse the trend.

President-elect Donald Trump, winner of the November 5 election against Kamala Harris, therefore consolidates his hold since the Senate, renewed by a third during the election, also switched to the Republican side with 53 seats out of 100 .

From a position of strength, the 78-year-old billionaire notably promised to carry out the largest eviction operation ever undertaken in the United States, to extend tax exemptions and to reshape the American economy. The Republican Party's electoral victories ensure that Congress will rally behind this agenda, which Democrats will struggle to counter.

“A decisive victory across the nation”

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, who, with the endorsement of Donald Trump, won the Republican nomination on Wednesday to keep this position of speaker, evoked the image of a “blowtorch” to take on the federal government, considering ways to reform even popular programs championed by Democrats in recent years.

“It was a decisive victory across the nation, said Mike Johnson. People want to see us implement and enforce our “America First” agenda. [“L’Amérique d’abord”]. »

On the Senate side, the Republicans elected John Thune, from a rather traditional Republican line, as leader on Wednesday. The South Dakota elected official said “extremely honored” of his victory, ensuring that the Republican team was “united behind President Trump’s agenda”. The election of John Thune, elected to the US Senate since 2005, marks the end of the era of Republican tenor Mitch McConnell, who had stormy relations with Donald Trump.

The Republican majority in the Senate also guarantees the party leeway to confirm Supreme Court judges in the event of a vacancy, as well as positions in Donald Trump's cabinet – even if the latter has said he wants to override this thanks to a clause that allows the president to make temporary appointments when the upper house is not in session.
