Donald Trump announced on Wednesday, November 13, that he would appoint Marco Rubio as Secretary of State, confirming information from American media. The senator, known for his anti-China positions, will be “an ardent defender of [la] nation [américaine]a true friend to [les] allies [du pays] and a fearless warrior who will never back down from [aux] opponents » of the United States, said the president-elect in a press release.

The influential 53-year-old Republican senator from Florida, born in Miami, son of Cuban immigrants, became the first head of American diplomacy fluent in Spanish.

Previously, Mr. Rubio exchanged schoolyard jokes with Donald Trump. Today, he becomes the new face of America in the world, a supporter of a hard line. He is particularly known for his firm diplomatic stances against China: he defended the sovereignty of Taiwan, worked to restrict commercial operations with Beijing and campaigned to punish the Chinese state for its actions in Hong Kong and against the Uighur minority.

Mr. Rubio is also a staunch supporter of Israel, fiercely opposing Iran and the rise of its nuclear program. Due to his family history, he also spoke out against the communist government of Havana or against other left-leaning Latin American countries, such as Venezuela.
