Israeli army spokesperson called to order for comments on Hamas

The spokesperson for the Israeli army described this Wednesday, June 19 as “window dressing” the idea that we could “make Hamas, against which Israel is fighting in Gaza, disappear,” drawing a reminder from the almost immediate order from the government.

“Hamas is an ideology, we do not eliminate an ideology. To say that we are going to make Hamas disappear is to throw smoke and mirrors in the eyes of the public,” declared Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari in an interview with Israeli television channel 13.

While the Israeli government appears divided for weeks on the question of the future of the Gaza Strip once the war is over, Admiral Hagari added: “If we do not foresee an alternative, at the end of the day After all, we will have Hamas” in power in Gaza.

“Destruction of Hamas as an ideology and idea”

“The destruction of Hamas’ government and military capabilities is one of the war goals defined by the security cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu,” Benjamin Netanyahu’s office quickly reacted in a terse statement.

“The IDF is obviously obliged to do so,” adds the text, in reference to the Israeli army.

The latter then published a press release according to which its spokesperson had “in his remarks […] spoke of the destruction of Hamas as an ideology and idea”, adding that his statements were “clear and explicit”, and that “any other statement would amount to taking things out of context”.

While the United States is trying to bring about a truce allowing the release of hostages held in Gaza in exchange for that of Palestinians imprisoned by Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu keeps repeating that he will continue the war until the elimination of Hamas.
