A total of 438,784 units of contraband cigarettes and various tobacco-based products were seized in 2023, indicates the Administration of Customs and Indirect Taxes (ADII) in its activity report for the past financial year.

The continuation of its efforts and collaboration with all stakeholders concerned have made it possible to further reduce the scale of this trafficking and thus contribute to the protection of public health and the national economy, adds the same source. The results of the 10th cigarette prevalence study carried out in 2023 revealed a penetration rate of contraband cigarettes of 1.85%, down compared to the previous two years (2.81% in 2022 and 1.91% in 2021). Furthermore, the constant mobilization of Customs in the face of the threats of illicit drug trafficking, through the use of technological means, the development of intelligence and collaboration with other national and international security bodies, has made it possible to achieve significant seized in 2023, mostly up compared to the previous year.

Anti-narcotics operations in 2023 thus made it possible to seize 21 tonnes of cannabis resin compared to 17 tonnes in 2022, 261 kg of hard drugs compared to 85.5 kg in 2022, 361,572 units of psychotropic tablets compared to 2,023,548 a year previously, and 3.3 tonnes of waterpipe tobacco (muassel) compared to 1.2 tonnes in 2022.
