Qatar has agreed to expel Hamas leaders from its territory, according to information revealed on Saturday by CNN. This decision comes following an explicit request from the United States, after months of unsuccessful negotiations on a ceasefire and the release of hostages in Gaza.
US officials notified Qatari authorities about two weeks ago that Hamas should no longer be given sanctuary in the capital, Doha. Qatar acquiesced and informed Hamas last week, according to American and Qatari sources cited by CNN.
“Hamas is a terrorist organization that has killed Americans and continues to hold American hostages,” a senior US administration official told CNN. “After rejecting multiple offers to release hostages, its leaders should no longer be welcome in our partners' capitals.” This increased pressure on Qatar follows in particular the death of the American-Israeli hostage Hersh Goldberg-Polin and the rejection by Hamas of a new ceasefire proposal.
The exact timetable for this departure and the future destination of Hamas leaders have not yet been defined. According to CNN, no deadline has been set for their departure. If Turkey is mentioned as a possible destination, this option will not receive the approval of Washington, for the same reasons that pushed the United States to demand their departure from Qatar.
