If Iran denounces completely unfounded accusations, the United States has arrested a man whom it accuses of being an “agent of Iran”. The latter, of Afghan nationality, is accused of having set up a criminal recruitment network with the aim of assassinating newly elected President Donald Trump.
American judicial authorities announced on Friday, November 8, that they had arrested and charged an “agent of Iran.” The latter is a 51-year-old Afghan, named Farhad Shakeri. He spent 14 years in prison in the United States and now resides in Iran. He is accused by the United States of having recruited common criminals on behalf of the Revolutionary Guards, according to court documents.
Iran denounces “totally unfounded” accusations
“Few actors in the world pose as serious a threat to U.S. national security as Iran,” said Merrick Garland, U.S. Attorney General. He adds that “This Iranian regime agent was tasked by the regime with leading a network of criminal accomplices to carry out Iran’s assassination plans against its targets, including President-elect Donald Trump.”
According to information from the FBI, the man was in contact with a senior member of the Revolutionary Guards who asked him for a plan to assassinate President-elect Donald Trump within the next seven days. Beyond the deadline, the attempt would be postponed until after the elections, betting on a defeat for Trump to then target him more easily.
This arrest takes place in a tense context between the two countries. Iran wants revenge for the death of Qassem Soleimani, general of the Revolutionary Guards, killed in 2020 by a drone strike ordered by Donald Trump. Two Americans were also arrested, planning an assassination attempt on an American-Iranian journalist, Masih Alinejad, very critical of the Islamic Republic.
