Explosions ring out in an underground car park: at least two dead and more than a dozen injured in Switzerland

On the evening of Thursday June 13, 2024, two people died following explosions in an underground car park in Switzerland.

Two people died Thursday evening and eleven others were lightly injured after several accidental explosions and a fire in an underground parking lot in Nussbaumen, northern Switzerland, police said in a statement released Friday.

An accident ?

It would be an accident whose exact circumstances are not yet known, explained Daniel Wächter, spokesperson for the police of the canton of Aargau, to the Keystone-ATS agency. It excludes a criminal act or an attack.

The explosions occurred around 7 p.m. on Thursday and the two people killed were found in an underground parking lot in this small town, which is some 25 kilometers northwest of Zurich. The eleven injured were only slightly injured.

The material damage was considerable, the fire having spread to one floor of a tower built above the underground car park, according to the police. Emergency services had to evacuate around a hundred people.

The police were forced to force the immediate landing of drones filming the scene so as not to interfere with the three helicopters engaged by the emergency services.
