(Keystone-ATS) American linguist, intellectual, writer and activist Noam Chomsky, aged 95, is hospitalized in Brazil after suffering a stroke about a year ago.

His wife, Brazilian linguist Valeria Wasserman, revealed in an interview given Tuesday to the Folha de Sao Paulo newspaper her husband’s state of health, which had been kept secret until now.

Chomsky, we read in Folha, is currently hospitalized in São Paulo, the city in which the couple has resided since 2015. He was transported by air ambulance when his health permitted, after suffering a stroke in June 2023 .

According to Ms. Wasserman, the American essayist and anti-globalization theorist had difficulty speaking and the stroke impaired the mobility of the right side of his body.

Daily monitoring

Mr. Chomsky is currently being monitored daily by a neurologist, a speech therapist and a pulmonologist to help him in his convalescence.

Wasserman told the newspaper that her husband still follows the news and that when he sees images of the war in Gaza, he raises his left arm in a gesture of regret and anger. It is precisely the linguist’s silence after Israel’s military intervention that had alerted his disciples and readers in recent months.
