Olaf Scholz, Emmanuel Macron and Donald Tusk at a press conference in Berlin
French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said Thursday they were “deeply concerned” about the political situation in Georgia, and indicated they could not support the opening of negotiations for the country's accession to the EU if it does not undertake reforms.
“If Georgia does not change course by demonstrating concrete reform efforts, including repealing its recent legislation which is contrary to European values and principles, we will not be able to support the opening of negotiations accession to the European Union with this country”, they said in a joint declaration within the framework of the Weimar Triangle.
The three leaders also expressed concern over reported irregularities in the legislative elections won in late October by the ruling party, a result contested by the opposition and over which independent observers expressed concern over the conduct of the elections.
