At least 95 people have died in the bad weather which has hit the south-east of Spain since Tuesday October 29. A year of rain fell in a few hours on the region and several towns were completely submerged.
“Dantesque” or even “monstrous”, these are the words used by witnesses to describe these dozens of torrents of water. Torrents that grew stronger throughout the night due to extraordinarily high rainfall.
In the village of Utiel, for example, a year's worth of rain fell in just eight hours. On video images, it is possible to see a bridge torn off and carried away by the waters. More than 90 dead, some of whom drowned in their cars. Many people still remain missing. A young woman waits for help on the roof of her car in the middle of the floodwaters.
On the morning of Wednesday October 30, it is also possible to see an impressive tangle of cars in the streets. In the affected towns, a lot of damage but also traumatized men and women. Even if the residents support each other, a lot of distress appears on their faces.
