A UK MP was suspended by his party on Sunday after he was filmed hitting a constituent.

Mike Amesbury was confronting a voter before surprising him by punching him in the face early Saturday morning.

His victim fell to the ground. The deputy then took advantage of the situation to beat him before passers-by intervened. The altercation lasted nearly 90 seconds, according to video obtained by the Daily Mail.

In a statement about the event, the Briton claimed to have been “threatened” before hitting the victim, around 2:15 a.m., in his constituency in Cheshire, in the west of the United Kingdom.

Surveillance camera footage, however, appears to show no sign of a real threat before the attack.

A Conservative candidate has criticized the Labor MP’s behavior.

“You can’t stay an MP if you beat your constituents after a night out,” said Robert Jenrick. Other conservatives called for the departure of the elected official.

A Labor Party spokesman said the 55-year-old MP had cooperated with the police investigation.

“As these investigations are ongoing, the Labor Party has administratively suspended Mr Amesbury’s membership of the Labor Party,” the spokesperson explained.
